Abstract
Inspired by Jocko Gretton Willink and his popular books “Extreme Ownership” and “The Dichotomy of Leadership” along with his popular podcast which presents a variety of principles and strategies for success in the modern world based on the core theme of “Extreme Ownership”, this presentation will report on the professional impact upon areas of physical, mental and interpersonal development of a number of university professors and lecturers in the faculty of Foreign Studies of a Japanese University. In this presentation the author will discuss insights into leadership, personal discipline, mental toughness and teamwork, and how they can be applied to our work as teachers and researchers. The author will try and breakdown the concept of “extreme ownership” into basic implementable principles which can be viewed in terms of relationships to (1) colleagues, and (2) students. This workshop will extend the opportunity for participants to establish their current status and create in a collaborative environment a plan of action to which they can implement in the next few years of their professional development. Dedicated time to educate ourselves and colleagues, peers and seniors, this workshop will prepare all participants with several ideas while building confidence and taking ownership of their current individual leadership skills and aims. With real ideas which can be immediately implemented into a teachers standard practice this presentation will surely reap huge rewards for individuals and for departments of any kind or size, leading to dramatic changes in standard thinking and also of team morale as all members grasp the core concepts employed, helping them to reassess their own responsibilities and opportunities. Examples of several actions include: creating a dynamic graphic resume, establishing a Google Scholar profile, a how-to for increasing your citation count of published academic papers, and other simple individual techniques and strategies to improve your standard working practice in the very near future
